I really like the Z 7 with this lense. It is a very light combination that takes great pictures. Very happy with this. Will be looking forward to more longer range lenses for the Z´s later on.
So, I spend a summer holiday week in Montreal with my new Z6 taking along my 50mm f/1.8 S prime and my F mount 20mm f/1.8 wide lens. I used both lenses and came back with gorgeous photos though it was a PIA to constantly change lenses. After reading many positive reviews about the 24-70mm f/2.8S I decided to add it to my arsenal. I had moments where a little more reach would have been desirable and moments of opportunity lost with the wrong lens on the camera.
While this glass isn´t quite as fast as my primes, the image quality is comparable, sharp, contrasty and most often not too much flair in spite of it being a zoom. Being able to program the third encoder ring for other uses is handy as si the user programmable push-button. The Z6 sensor is quiet enough so you can push the ISO a bit and still capture great images at F/2.8. IT has a nice heft yet its fairly compact. If you are accustomed to telephoto lenses or hefting a professional video camera, this lens is a lightweight and won´t bog you down even when shooting all day.
Price is high for the casual photographer. For the professional or high level amateur, it´s worth the cost. There is a bit of doubt about it truly being professional class glass. For zooming it is a pumper, the front objective moves in and out. This may be fine for shortening the lens when not shooting, but it may permit dust and moisture ingress. I prefer IC zooms where all of the element shifting is internal.
That said, it is amazingly sharp at all focal lengths and apertures. Truly a new generation of glass that can compete with primes. I plan to leave it permanently on my Z6 and use a longer reach zoom on my Z7.
Since I exchange with the Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/4 S), I carried this lens all the time when I take photos. The result is very sharp and crisp compare to my Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 F lens.
Before this lens I was using my f-mount 24-70. It is heavy and hard to use with the Z6 being there is no vertical button on the camera. So I took the plunge and bought its equivalent in the Z series. Its awesome. Its brighter lighter and sharp as heck from end to end. The only problem is manually focusing with the little ring on the end. In low light it tends to not focus and I need to manually override and its darn near impossible other than that I love the lens. Its a great native lens for the Z series.
First, I want to say I do not consider myself a professional. I have shot only two weddings and love to shoot for fun. However, I have been playing around with digital photography since its inception. For me Digital Photography only became practical since sensors hit the 20 mega pixel mark. The lenses could not keep up with the sensors. Nikon has reached.a pinnacle in lens design vs. affordability with the Z Series. While this lens is still 1.8-2k which most people will not consider affordable, there is a huge caveat. It quite simply is the first lens that I can honestly say fits the moniker, if I only had one lens this would be it.
You do not sacrifice detail and quality with this Zoom lens, it is sharp from edge to edge. The 24-70mm focal range fits the vast majority of needs and when you couple that with Prime quality, it leaves little need for faster primes.
I am very happy with this lens, VERY happy.
The NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S is one of the most versatile lenses ever! This is a must for any photographer for just about any situation. Wedding, portraits, landscapes and sports.
best sharpest lens in my pro collection.
it is shorter and lighter and brighter than my excellent f mount 24-70
The lens hardly comes off my camera. Us it for family events, video, landscapes. Excellent lense.
Only slight negative is it is a little heavy, but compared to the f4 version, much sharper.
Before this lens was using the F-Mount version with the FTZ adapter. Based on YouTube reviews, I originally did not see a reason to invest $2000 in this native lens. I was having quality images with the 24-70 f-mount lens. But the size was an issue, especially for traveling.
So, I took the plunge. I am glad I did. The difference in picture quality, focusing, aperture, ergonomics is noticeable. So noticeable that I will be selling my old f-mount lenses and start moving to native lenses for Z bodies.
I also observed that focusing in the Z7 works better with this lens. Especially when I am Shooting stills at f5 or higher. The edge to edge sharpness is noticeable. With the old F-Mount version, I was missing edge to edge focus about 60% of the times I was shooting (even after enabling AE-L). This was noticeable with apertures higher than 4, especially f8. I have not experienced this issue with this native lens so far. It´s reliable.
It´s the best in its class. Quiet a piece of engineering.
I am waiting for the z 105 mm f 1.2 or 85 mm f 1.2.
